Press release - Women's rights/Equal opportunities − 04-11-2016 - 11:19
A delegation of Parliament's Committee on women's
rights and gender equality visited Athens yesterday and today (3-4 November
2016), in order to receive first-hand information on the situation of women and
girls refugees in Greece, the tools used to tackle human trafficking and the
infrastructure used to provide assistance to victims.
Women and young girls asylum seekers and refugees
often face multiple forms of gender based violence, including sexual and
domestic violence. Members of the delegation have witnessed the difficulties
these women are confronted with in the reception facilities. There is clearly
an urgent need to improve their situation, said Members. Members call on the
Greek authorities to swiftly ratify the Istanbul Convention on preventing
and combating violence against women.
Despite the efforts done by the authorities and the work of the different organisations working in the field, the European Parliament committee on women's rights and gender equality says that more needs to be done to improve the living conditions, the security, the access to safe and separate spaces and access to information and education, and overall support for women refugees and unaccompanied minors, as already recommended in a European Parliament resolution.Members strongly underline the need for a coordinated approach to address the specific needs of these vulnerable people and to find a solid solution to address their concerns about their future. Members of the delegation ask for the use of EU funding to be coordinated, effective, and gender sensitive. Members look forward to the forthcoming closure of Elliniko camps and the speeding up of the procedure ahead of the winter. Member States should implement the relocation agreement as a principle of solidarity, paying a special attention to unaccompanied minors, MEPs said.
